ANANTNAG, 13 NOVEMBER: Today, the Department of Radiation Oncology, Government Medical College Anantnang observed Cancer awareness day, bringing together healthcare professionals, students, and community members to promote cancer prevention, screening, and treatment. The theme for the day was, “Early Detection saves lives.”
Peerzada Faizan, Radiation Therapist, opened and hosted the event, introducing the purpose of the program on behalf of the Department of Radiation Oncology. Prof. Dr. Rukhsana Najeeb, Principal of GMC Anantnag, emphasized the importance of regular cancer screenings and shared details of upcoming projects designed to strengthen cancer care and resources at GMC Anantnag.
Prof. Dr. Mohmad Ashraf delivered an insightful talk on the role of radiotherapy in treating cancer, underscoring its vital impact in comprehensive cancer care. Dr. Shahid Bashir Wani, Head of the Radiation Oncology Department, highlighted the department’s recent achievements and laid out a future strategy to enhance oncology services to impact positively patient outcomes within the institution.
Dr. Ashfaq Ahmed Naqash discussed the importance of cancer screenings with a particular focus on breast cancer, stressing early detection as a key factor in improving survival rates. Adding to this theme, Dr. Ishtiyaq Ahmad Dar emphasized the need for a hospital-based cancer registry to monitor cancer trends and support ongoing research initiatives at GMC Anantnag.
The program also addressed cancer prevention, with Dr. Amir Yousuf, Head of the ENT Department, speaking on the causes and preventive measures for head and neck cancers. Dr. Ashfaq Hafiz closed the presentations with a discussion on the link between tobacco use and cancer, urging lifestyle modifications to reduce cancer risks.
The event concluded with an awards ceremony recognizing all the speakers for their contributions to raising cancer awareness. The program was a significant step in GMC Anantnag’s mission to promote community health and support effective cancer care, with the Department of Radiation Oncology leading the charge in education and advocacy.
Prof. Dr. Najeeb, Principal and Dean praised the department of radiation oncology for providing excellent patient despite the challange related to infrastructure, equipment and man personal. She said that she will go an extra mile to help the department to grow much faster and meet the expectations of the people and the patients in need of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
