The division has been a painful experience. Unity among separatists is imperative for resolution of Kashmir. In view of India’s rigid stand on Kashmir in the past few years, it is high time for forging unity among the profreedom leadership of Kashmir.
Though in 2010 I tried to forge unity among the separatist leadership. But ironically, some parties have their own interests and way of pursuing the ongoing movement.

Shabir Shah-DFP chief and general secretary of the Huriyat led by Syed Ali Geelani while pitching for the unity of the likeminded persons in the pro-freedom camp has stated that unity is the need of the hour and that efforts must be made in this regard. During an interview with the Kashmir Leader Magazine, Shah said that the pro-freedom parties who have a common agenda must stay united for the greater cause and that it is the only way to achieve freedom in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. He said that it is the most common notion here that united we stand, divided we fall.Shah said that he dreams for the united Hurriyat, adding that the unison with the Huriyat led by Syed Ali Geelani is only on the basis of ideology.
He added that he and Geelani has no difference in the stand. “We invite others too to come under one platform,” Shah said. In an interview, he said: “The division has been a painful experience. Though in 2010 I tried to forge unity among the separatist leadership. But ironically, some parties have their own interests and way of pursuing the ongoing movement. Agencies also leave no stone unturned to keep the pro-freedom camp divided but we have to remember that united we stand and divided we fall. The Hurriyat has initiated the unity process. We have started to formulate joint strategies on various issues including the GOI proposal of settling down the west Pak Refugees.
A beginning has been made and we will soon expedite the unity process. The unity will be forged only with that leader whose stand on Kashmir is not vague and want to resolve the dispute according to UN resolutions and aspirations of Kashmiris.“ Over the dialogue, Shah said that in principle he is not against the institution of dialogue but same must not be a mere time consuming exercise. “We are not against the talks. But it should be meaningful. India should understand that the core issue should remain Kashmir dispute. The Kashmir issue needs to be resolved under the aspirations of the people.
The issue can be resolved through Tripartite talks and India should realize that the people of Kashmir have sacrificed thousands of lives for right to self-determination. Until the core issue of Kashmir is resolved other problems will continue to confront both the countries. India should also accept that Pakistan is party to the dispute and it has always rendered diplomatic and moral support to Kashmiris. I can also say that Kashmir is a globally-recognized dispute. Even the US President Barrack Obama and UN chief Ban Ki Moon termed Kashmir as long-pending dispute during their visits to India. International community including the European Union has been favoring amicable resolution of Kashmir. The dispute can only be resolved through dialogue, but unfortunately India wants to suppress the voice of Kashmiris through its military might.”

Commenting over the present political situation in the state, Shah said that the situation has gone from bad to worse. The basic human rights are being violated by the ‘occupying authority’. “ Lakhs have been martyred, thousands raped by the occupying forces. The so called alliance between PDP and BJP was the conspiracy to divide the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Both the parties are the different faces of the same coin. The people in entire Jammu and Kashmir should remain vigilant against the secret nefarious designs of RSS who are working on ending the Muslim majority status of Jammu and Kashmir.”
