This gory incident not only raised fingers over the functioning of the Education System in trouble torn Kashmir but also raised some important questions that authorities need to answer. Adnan, a 17 year old first semester student of electronic engineering at Government Polytechnic College in Srinagar ended his life after checking his ‘unsuccessful’ result on Internet. After months of re-evaluation process the family members of the deceased student were dumbfound when it came to fore that Adnan had secured 48 marks in Physics and not 28 as declared earlier.
A ‘blunder’ on part of evaluator or the Board of Technical Education forced a bright student to end his life. Who can be blamed for this murder? Describing Examiner ‘deadwood and pitching for his forcible retirement is not going to solve any problem and neither by taking such decision Government can prevent such incidents in future. There is a need to fix some responsibility on someone. There is a dire need to improve the system and make every official accountable. How can the Board of Technical Education be so irresponsible that it assigns the responsibility of evaluating technical subject to a non-technical lecturer? How can an Evaluator
The students do believe that Evaluation System in Jammu and Kashmir is a rotten one and majority of the Evaluators commit blunders and follies while evaluating the Answer Papers of the students, courtesy-lack of accountability.
The students do believe that Evaluation System in Jammu and Kashmir is a rotten one and majority of the Evaluators commit blunders and follies while evaluating the Answer Papers of the students, courtesy lack of accountability. We don’t need‘re-evaluation’ system if we make our ‘evaluation’ system effective. Let the Board and the Government make the Evaluators strictly accountable for their evaluation and the results will be wonderful. A student during a group discussion aptly remarked that student’s career depends upon the mood of the Evaluator. ‘When the Evaluator is in good mood he ignores the biggest mistakes committed by the student and God forbid, if he has entered into an argument with his spouse or something awful has hap- pened to him, then only God can save the students that time.” Adnan’s incident has shaken the Valley. Experts believe that it is the right time to make the evaluation system effective and hold the Evaluators exclusively responsible for the mistakes if they commit.
“You can demote and Evaluator or you can stop his promotion and increment, if he is found to be callous in his attitude while evaluating any examination pa- per. There are thousands of means to stop Adnan like incidents in future but it needs will and dedication from authorities to deliver the goods.”
