JK SRTC state road transport corporation (JKSRTC) established in 1950 had a glorious past as it was capable of running more than 1600 vehicles, extending satisfactory services from cargo to city services.
During the period of turmoil.. SRTC on the one hand lost 135 vehicles in the series of militancy related incidents and on the other hand suffered heavy losses while performing service to the public in general and to the government in particular.
Despite the claims of the state government over facilities the flow of tourists to Kashmir valley, the shabby condition of the SRTC- state’s own transport de- partment, is one such aspect that prove the claims of the helmsmen as hallow and farce. There are complaints which continue to pour in from various quarters about the state government doing little to develop SRTC into a modern transport department that could have ensured rev- enue besides the good chunk of tourists from various states of India. Reports inform that not only are the latest facilities being out rightly denied to the SRTC but at the same time there are no measures being taken to repair the flood affected transport buses. If there are few, plying on the national highways, there condition too remains dilapidated. Gone are the days when the SRTC buses were considered no less than the luxurious vehicles with facilities luring the passengers at the disposal. At present, such is the condition of this state owned transport service that one would think twice before deciding to opt the SRTC bus for the journey.
As the government has been claiming of utilising the SRTC buses for the tour- ist services, the plan seems to be back firing at the authorities due to shabby condition of these vehicles. Sources stated that the engines and other relevant parts in the vehicles have not been repaired since decades due to which not only is the routine business getting affected but also is widening gaps between the general masses and this state owned transport corporation JK SRTC state road transport corporation (JKSRTC) established in 1950 had a glorious past as it was capable of running more than 1600 vehicles, ex- tending satisfactory services from car- go to city services.
