The state authorities are showing least concern over what the people are terming the ‘outlaw’ approach by the auto Rikhshaws plying on city routes. People say that the rules are being thrown to wind as rikhshaw wallas charge them much more than the actual rates. Reports informed that people particularly during the dark hours are being taken for a ride by the auto Rikhshaws as for mere three to four kilometers; hundreds of rupees are being charged. “They take advantage of the situation like anything. Seeing a person is in need, they charge you five times than the actual rate as no one is there to hold them account- able,” said one of the aggrieved passengers. Scores of others said that due to the absence of any particular rate sched- ule, issued by the state government, the auto Rikhshaws dictate extreme high charges to the passengers sans any remorse.
“The government so far has done taken any measure to curb such crises. I mean there are no rate meters and no fixed fares available. ” SSP traffic Haseem-ur-Rahman when contacted stated that there must be wide publicity of the rates in the auto Rikhshaws so that people are not deceived at any place or at any time. Stressing that rates must be revived on Monthly basis, SSP traffic said that as per the rate of the fuel, fares should have been finalized. “Earlier, the rates were finalized by the government but since the fuel prices changed, so did the fares of the Rikhshaws. I think there must be a wide scale publicity for the same,” SSP Traffic had stated.
